TDK is presenting EPCOS products that are used in charging piles for a wide range of application such as the DC link, circuit protection, input and output filtering, and power disconnection. The focus is on aluminum electrolytic and film capacitors, power EMC filters, surge arresters and high-voltage contactors, as well as PTC thermistors and varistors. Product highlights

High-voltage contactors - Portfolio extended for high current capabilities up to 500 A

The HVC series of high-voltage contactors now features the new HVC300 and HVC500 types with current capabilities of 300 A and 500 A, respectively. The new contactors can switch high voltages of up to 900 V DC, while types for 1200 V DC are available on request.
Their gas-filled switching chamber ensures that arcs are safely and quickly extinguished when the current is switched off. Thanks to the extremely fast switching capability of the HVC high-voltage contactors the duration of arcs is especially short, thus enabling reliable operations over the entire lifetime of the contactor. The new types have the same compact design as the HVC200 for 200 A with the same dimensions of 89 mm x 44 mm x 93.5 mm (l x w x h). Like the HVC200, the new high-voltage contactors are available with coils for operating voltages of 12 V or 24 V. In addition, the series includes types with an output for switching status detection.
The HVC series is especially suitable for use in battery management systems and DC charging stations in e-mobility applications. Further applications include DC traction systems, photovoltaic, energy storage systems, and uninterruptable power supplies (UPS). These applications require fast and reliable disconnecting from the DC source.

Varistors with increased permissible operating temperature

The leaded EPCOS metal oxide disk varistors are now approved for an increased operating temperature of 105 °C (previously 85 °C). The reason for this is the recertification of the B722* series of varistors in accordance with UL 1449, 4th Edition, and IEC 61051. Raising the permissible operating temperature to 105 °C also changes the climate category from 40/85/56 to 40/105/56. The flammability of the epoxy enclosure complies with UL 94 V-0. The monolithic EPCOS varistors are available with rated voltages of between 11 VRMS and 1100 VRMS and, depending on type, can withstand surge currents of up to 20 kA (8/20 µs).

Film capacitors with high pulse strength and current capability

TDK’s EPCOS MMKP capacitors employ a film that is metallized, offering particularly high pulse strength as well as a high current capability. Depending on the type and frequency, the permissible current can be up to more than 10 ARMS. A further outstanding feature is the compact design of the MMKP series. The capacitors have dimensions of between 4 mm x 9 mm x 13 mm and 11 mm x 18.5 mm x 18 mm and are available with lead spacings of 10 mm and 15 mm.

The B32641B* and B 32642B* series of rugged MMKP capacitors are designed for voltages of 630 V DC or 1000 V DC and cover a capacitance range from 4.7 nF to 150 nF. The maximum operating temperature is +110 °C. The main applications are circuits that operate with high frequencies and currents, including resonant circuits of power supplies with an LLC topology.

EMC filters with high performance in a very compact design

TDK’s B84243A8* series of EPCOS EMC filters currently comprises seven different types that are designed for currents of between 3 A and 60 A – based on a rated temperature of 50 °C. Furthermore, the filters are characterized by their very compact dimensions: Depending on the exact model, these typically lie between 190 mm x 40 mm x 95 mm and 250 mm x 85 mm x 120 mm. Recessed connections permit optimum access to the mounting bracket, making the filters suitable for installation in switching cabinets or where limited space is available. The adherence to the EMC limits defined in EN 61800-3 C1 for motor cable lengths of up to 25 m and C2 of up to 50 m has been verified by measurements of various commercially available frequency converters with input rectifier stages.
Apart from their outstanding EMC performance, the new 3-line EMC filters also feature very short discharge times. For example, at currents up to 44 A the filters achieve a residual voltage of <60 V in less than one minute. The 3 A version with a leakage current of less than 2 mA has been specially developed for plug-in devices that must meet low leakage current limits. The other models in the new series have leakage currents of no more than 5.1 mA and can also be operated in environments with sensitive residual current devices (RCDs). In addition, the EPCOS filters are designed for a high short-circuit current (SCCR) of 100 kA in accordance with UL 508. Approvals according to UL, CSA and ENEC are pending.
